Hello Mark,
You ask one simple thing ... you know? :-)
First you need to avoid putting fish in the aquarium smuovano the sand, or any of your attempts within 4-5 days it will be vanished. I talk so big fish more than a dwarf cichlid, fish and "bottom", as Ancistrus or E. Siamensis or Corydoras. And even the snails do not help at all ...

Then you use a plastic partition (on the left is a beautiful picture taken from ' aqua journal ADA ), which ritaglierai the length and this must also have the "tabs" parallel to the glass bottom, so the sand over the place in its place.
Put the sand behind for the plants, then put the divider vertically and by the "curve" that you prefer, pushing the sand where it is needed.
Then, when everything stands on its own, is well planted and before you totally free, add more sand finish. You're a little 'under the edge of the partition, then you cover it with plants, the ideal is to keep even the rocks and wood to make a divider "superficial".

If you can make us some pictures ... because I personally have only tried it once and with only partial success ... because even the little guys do not know how they manage to slip over the Flourite sand ... climbing over rocks and wood! :-(
