Aquarium and aquarium in my passion for plants, fish and aquatic world
Article on Acquaportal dedicated to the "mythical" Vodka method "for the marine aquarium tropical reef, the method aims to reduce nitrates and phosphates (No3 and PO4).
A few years ago when I had the ' marine aquarium is up and running, I spoke of the use of Vodka in the aquarium , and in general the addition of carbon sources, I am pleased that the "method" is not set, despite the prevalence and wide use of product lines dedicated to the breeding of corals , as Xaqua , ZEOvit and others.
At the time I have to say that the results were excellent.

Hello Raphael,
Tonight I am going to begin the Vodka method to lower the NO3 that are currently at 10 mg / l
I wanted a certainty ... I will use 1ml syringe that is used for calcium and magnesium, 1 ml of vodka means that the liquid level reaches the mark of 1ml or the black plunger arrives at the notch 1ml?
Just to avoid confusion and wrong doses.
About .... my aquarium is 100x40x50 (180LT gross), doses that you advise me to start?
Thanks
Hello
Antonio
For me the sign is given by the lower part of the black plunger ... the important thing is to still be consistent with themselves, rather than the absolute measure

However you are on a litraggio similar to mine, although with 10 mg / l would avoid using it, close a couple of changes and make them even better lower the total system.
If, you see that grow constantly, then you can search for corrections to bring the system to NOT bring up nutrients. It can also speak here, if you want.
That is to say that vodka can be used but should not be necessary, at least this is my opinion.
Let's talk here, I'm glad, might be useful to someone else.
This requirement stems from the fact that I've fixed the NO3 to 10 a few months, although in my tank there are 6 small fishes, and not every day I feed.
From the moment I placed the triad and inserted SPS, I see that their colors are not strong, but at some point they tend to brown, from here the will to try notary emiglioramenti lowering nutrients.
Also a few weeks fighting with weeds algae on the rocks (derbesia) and do not know how to defeat it. Sicuramernte not giving nutrients to the algae something happens, but I'm not sure it can be the only remedy. Are annoying to see and I'd like to see them disappear.
Well, however, are forced to raise their hands because 3 or 4 years ago I found myself in a similar situation, I used the method vodka ... and I have continued to go crazy behind algae infestations continue, then dismantle the aquarium.
So I would say, surely, to wait to use vodka ... try other solutions first.
We continue to talk about it and, indeed, are very curious to see how to carry your battle against Derbesia, but I did not have that. But you have algae eaters? Which fish you currently have?
Let's talk about ... Derbesia
FISH:
2 Amphiprion ocellaris
Premnas
Salarias
Pterapogon kauderni
Valenciennea
Oxycirrhites typus
As you see Salarias alghivora and eats Derbesia and partly Valenciennea, but it would take a tank to eradicate all ...
Besides writing on various forums does not help because the first thing you should figure out what they say and that's the catch, as if it was easy ....
The first answers are easy ones, it is clear ... but you do not think that they have the nutrients to make a mess of yourself. Why, then I had several Acropora and SPS, and held ALWAYS ZERO nutrients, nitrate and phosphate NOT speak traceable. But clearly they were not even all the algae because I kept them low, eating all those who immettevo.
And to give you an example, in my current aquarium I always at least 10 mg / l, I also had 50 in September, but for a number of factors algae are under control.
What I would advise is (all together, not one thing or the other)
- Team algae eaters, you have the Salarias, keep hermit crabs as 5-6
- Attention to lighting, beautiful cold stimulates corals and less algae
- Algae competitors yet somewhere, find a small space in the SUMP, if you do not have to buy a small plastic aquarium hang with inside eg chetomorpha which is easy to keep at bay (looks like a tangle of wires Plastic fine). Or at least you found a way to get ANYWHERE in the algae that grow in competition with those NOT WANT
- Moving optimum internal
When you're ALL right, arm yourself A LOT of patience and try to rip ALL the algae that you see, all. Do it in sessions of 15-20 minutes to not be tired too, but inserobilmente have to clean everything you can in one day. At this point the team will do its job with cleaning the debris and algae competitors yet take away those unwanted energy.
What do you think?
5 or 6 hermit crabs, however, are expensive, I wanted to avoid fees, though ...
The chetomorpha I have it for 2 weeks, woven into 10 cm square plastic netting garden, go where it wants to avoid hanging on the rear window.
The algae grow only on rocks, I think I should arm myself with patience and the next change of water powerful scrape somehow.
Another idea that I dance for the mind, is to try to take the Alganex bacteria which seem made on purpose for this type of problems, but first I want to document myself.
What say you?
ALGANEX bacteria? Never heard of them ... if you have some links that I giramelo document!
Begin to put at least 3 hermit crabs. They cost ... but they are actually useful, which is why everyone always keep in the aquarium, these tanks or small-urchins, beautiful and very efficient, but if you have small coral cuttings and especially you throw them down like nothing.
The analysis of Raphael is almost perfect ... even if I would put even a hedgehog, a small mespilia globulus is fine ...
A mespilia globulus?!?!?
I like that, it is pleasing to see.
The important thing that strikes me the cuttings of SPS
oh yes, the strikes you! Do you have to paste all. That's for sure.
